As we move into December, we mourn the passing of our 41st President, George H.W. Bush.  We will also start looking at Congress and the role of that institution in creating laws and its role in policy. AP Gov Update for November 12-16 (and even through Thanksgiving Break)

Let's honor the Veterans who have served our nation not just on Monday but every day of the year.  I recently went to Washington, DC and visited Arlington National Cemetary where many veterans and civil servants lay for eternity.   While I was there, there was an Honor Flight group from California.  They included veterans from Korea and Vietnam eras.   I saw the changing of the guard and the daily wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  You will need to visit this if you are ever in DC. It's finally going to be election day!  We didn't cover elections yet, but when we do next week, we will be able to review what happened during this mid-term election cycle. The grading period ends this week.  If you need to turn in any missing work, you need to turn it in by Friday. Preamble:  What are some criticisms of political commentary? When you finish your preamble: Go to the hallway to chose one of the posters.  Three of the posters will have four people, one (blue) will have five.    Each poster will have a specific color Post-It note.  You will use the AMSCO book to find details or make commentary to complete two different notes.  Do not repeat what anyone else says.  You can add on details to a previous note. Next step, you are going to click on one of the links that correspond with the color POST-IT note you used.  You and the others in the group will create a poster with important information about this media source you are going to research.  This will be presented to the class. AP Gov Post for October 15-19

There will be a couple of extra credit opportunities available for students this week. You can earn up to 50 extra credit points.  This was explained in class on Friday.  There are two opportunities.  The first is to attend the Meet the Candidate Forum at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW Hall on Main Street in Grafton.  This will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16.  This will be a moderated event with questions asked by a presenter and possibly questions from the audience. The second option is to watch 2 videos online.  The videos are currently online on Facebook.  You will need to search for "Unleash Tygart".  There are a series of  videos  that are dated October 5 and October 9.  These include candidates for State Senate, House of Delegates, County Commission, and U.S. House of Representatives. AP Gov Update for October 1-5

Monday, October 1, is a momentous occasion for a couple of reasons.  First, it is the beginning of the federal fiscal year in which the budget year starts.  Also, the first Monday in October is the beginning of the U.S. Supreme Court year.  Last Tuesday was National Voter Registration Day and a voter registration drive in conjunction with Youth Leadership Association (YLA) was administered.  I gave extra credit to those who registered or verified that they are registered.  I am still offering that if you are able to show me evidence of this.  I know many of you are not 18 yet, so if you bring in any political/election campaign paraphernalia, I will provide extra credit.  Do not take yard signs, as this is a crime! There will be a Voter Registration Drive during lunches on Tuesday, September 25, in front of the cafeteria.  If you are eligible to vote in November, you can check your status and even register to vote. The first six weeks grading period ends on Wednesday.  If you are missing any assignments from the first six weeks, you need to get organized and turn everything in by Thursday morning as grades have to be turned in on Friday morning.  Do not delay! Monday is Constitution Day!  We will celebrate federalism that day! Every year, there is a Constitution Day lecture held at the Mother's Day Shrine.  This year it will be held on Tuesday, September 18 at 6:30 p.m. The featured speaker is WVU Law Professor Anne Lofaso.  I would encourage students to attend this event.  This will last for about half an hour.   Extra credit will be offered if you are in attendance. AP Gov Update for September 10-14

As we move closer to Constitution Day, we are going to move from the origins of the Constitution to the role that federalism plays in our state and national governments. We are currently watching the process of a Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, go through Senate Judiciary hearings.  CNN aired a documentary  last Monday about a veteran Associate Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and it will re-air the documentary Sunday night at 8 p.m.  It focuses on her early life to the present.  We will start a new cycle of current events this week.  The first half of the alphabet will turn in on Monday.  It will be Grading Period 1 and CE#2.  When you are to describe quantitative information, describe measurable information. AP Gov Update for September 4-7

As we move into the first full month of the school year, we will be focusing on the Constitution and questions about its features.  This will tie into the aftermath of 9/11 and what actions the government can do.  Also, on September 17, we will celebrate the anniversary of the Constitution in class But first, we have to take a look at why there is no school on Monday.  It is a national holiday known as Labor Day and it was a result of the Progressive and Labor movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s.  Here is a link from the United States Department of Labor about Labor Day. Welcome back to Grafton High School!  I am sure everyone is thrilled for their senior year! I usually send weekly updates in this format through Remind, LiveGrades, and student email accounts each week.  Be sure to check this to get an idea what we are doing for the week.  The agenda may change as the week goes on. I just want to update everyone about what we are going to do this week. Wednesday: Turn in Constitution Study Guide Class procedures Thursday: Citizenship test.  I give this test each year at the beginning and end of the school year.  This is the same type of test immigrants would have to take to become naturalized U.S. citizens and pass with 80% success.  But this test is multiple choice, while they have to write in answers.  This is a baseline test and it shows me where you are starting at in class. Friday: You will recieve your textbook and we will check them out in the library. You will also take a PIPS quiz. ...

If you are leaving after any AP exams over the next two weeks, you need to have a parent excuse submitted to the office before you sign out.
